Brief Biosketch

Dr. J. Steven Picou is Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work at the University of South Alabama. Dr. Picou has held previous academic and research appointments at The Ohio State University (1971-75) and Texas A&M University (1975-1987). He received his Ph.D. in 1971 from Louisiana State University.

 

 


Dr. Picou has also served as an Affiliate Scientist, Prince William Sound Science Center, Adjunct Scientist, Cooper River Delta Institute, Research Fellow, Social Science Research Institute, University of Central Florida and Adjunct Scientist, Social Science Research Center, Mississippi State University. Over the last 38 years, he has published over 70 articles, 22 book chapters, four books and numerous research monographs in the areas of environmental sociology, disasters, social theory, social stratification, sociology of education, and applied sociology (see vita). Since, 1971, Dr. Picou has received 2.4 million dollars in extramural funding from agencies such as the National Science Foundation, U.S. Office of Education, Environmental Protection Agency, Prince William Sound Regional Citizens' Advisory Council, Alabama Department of Environmental Management, Alabama Center for Estuarine Studies, Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium, the Rockerfeller Foundation, the Gates Foundation, and the Social Science Research Council. He is currently directing a five year study of community recovery from Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi and Louisiana. In 2008, Dr. Picou received the William Foote Whyte Distinguished Career Award from the American Sociological Association section on Sociological Practice.
